چکیده

Semiempirical interatomic potentials have been developed for Al, a-Ti, and g-TiAl within the embedded atom method ~EAM! formalism by fitting to a large database of experimental as well as ab initio data. The ab initio calculations were performed by the linearized augmented plane wave ~LAPW! method within the density functional theory to obtain the equations of state for a number of crystal structures of the Ti-Al system. Some of the calculated LAPW energies were used for fitting the potentials while others for examining their quality. The potentials correctly predict the equilibrium crystal structures of the phases and accurately reproduce their basic lattice properties. The potentials are applied to calculate the energies of point defects, surfaces, and planar faults in the equilibrium structures. Unlike earlier EAM potentials for the Ti-Al system, the proposed potentials provide a reasonable description of the lattice thermal expansion, demonstrating their usefulness for moleculardynamics and Monte Carlo simulations at high temperatures. The energy along the tetragonal deformation path ~Bain transformation! in g-TiAl calculated with the EAM potential is in fairly good agreement with LAPW calculations. Equilibrium point defect concentrations in g-TiAl are studied using the EAM potential. It is found that antisite defects strongly dominate over vacancies at all compositions around stoichiometry, indicating that g-TiAl is an antisite disorder compound, in agreement with experimental data.

Role of Interatomic Potentials in Simulation of Thermal Transport in Carbon Nanotubes

Interatomic potentials, which describe interactions between elements of nanosystems, are crucial in theoretical study of their physical properties. We focus on two well known empirical potentials, i.e. Tersoff's and Brenner's potentials, and compare their performance in calculation of thermal transport in carbon nanotubes. In this way, we study the temperature and diameter dependence of thermal...

Interatomic potentials and atomistic calculations of some metal hydride systems

The effective interatomic pair potentials for Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta and their hydrides are obtained by inverting the ab initio cohesive energy curves based on the lattice inversion method, and then the inverted pair potentials are used to calculate the mechanical and thermal properties of these hydrides.  2002 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

Lattice thermal conductivity of ultra high temperature ceramics ZrB2 and HfB2 from atomistic simulations

Atomistic Green-Kubo simulations are performed to evaluate the lattice thermal conductivity for single crystals of the ultra high temperature ceramics ZrB2 and HfB2 for a range of temperatures. Recently developed interatomic potentials are used for these simulations. Heat current correlation functions show rapid oscillations which can be identified with mixed metal-Boron optical phonon modes. A...
